Batshuayi tweets about own goal, Chelsea fans react

Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi was left red-faced when he headed into his own net against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The Belgian international was defending a free kick when his attempted clearance inadvertently sent the ball past Thibaut Courtois, changing the scoreline to 1-1.

It could not have been worse timing as just eight minutes were left on the clock, but thankfully for Batshuayi, his teammate Marcos Alonso scored his second goal of the day to give Chelsea all three points.

Pressure was on Antonio Conte’s side at Wembley after their opening-day defeat to Burnley, but they managed to get the job done.

The main focus has been on the Blues’ transfer activity and the controversy surrounding wantaway striker Diego Costa, but on Sunday it was all about matters on the pitch.

Batshuayi took to social media to praise Alonso for basically saving the striker’s skin following his own-goal howler.

The fans were quick to respond, and the tweets were much more light-hearted than they arguably would have been if the forward’s own goal had been costly.
