The FA have announced that Burnley midfielder and former Rangers man Joey Barton has been suspended from ‘all footballling activity’ for 18 months after admitting an FA misconduct charge relating to betting.
— The FA (@FA) April 26, 2017
It was alleged between 26 March 2006 and 13 May 2016, the 34 year old placed 1,260 bets on the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of, or occurrence in, football matches or competitions in breach of FA Rule E8.
It’s been a terrible season for the midfielder, who had a calamitous time at Rangers before negotiating his release from the club having not even made 10 appearances for the Light Blues. He then re-joined Burnley in January before this latest ban.
He became a divisive figure in Scottish football after a high-profile summer move last year that many predicted could make Rangers competitive with Celtic after their promotion to the top-flight.
As you can imagine this latest ban has caused quite the stir north of the border, Scottish football has seen its fair share of betting scandals itself of course, and fans of both clubs took to Twitter to share their thoughts on it all…
That Barton ban puts all the SFA's 1 and 2 game bans into perspective.

Who'd have thought that 9 months after signing for Rangers, Joey Barton's playing career would be over. Me actually.

Bet Joey Barton wishes he'd stayed with Rangers and got to know Ian Black a little better…
