English Premier League champions Chelsea suffered a shock opening day defeat on Saturday after Burnley travelled to Stamford Bridge and picked up a 3-2 win.

Antonio Conte's side were reduced to nine men across the 90 minutes with captain Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas sent off. Cahill's dismissal was a particular blow given he received his marching orders in just the 14th minute after a rash challenge on Steven Defour.

From that point on it was of course difficult for the Blues to challenge and the visitors surged to a 3-0 lead at half-time thanks to goals from Sam Vokes and Stephen Ward.

A spirited comeback in the second half was not enough to rescue any points, with Chelsea becoming only the second team in Premier League history to lose their opening game of the season as reigning champions.

To say supporters were upset with the result is an understatement. They were eager to see what Conte's new look side could do but feel denied that opportunity thanks to Cahill's red card.

The new Chelsea captain did not escape criticism with many taking to Twitter to share their anger...
