Out-of-form Everton defender Ashley Williams was partly at fault for the goal that Wales conceded in their 1-0 defeat against the Republic of Ireland at the Cardiff City Stadium on Monday night that ended their hopes of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup, and Toffees fans weren’t impressed with his performance.
The Welsh went into the tie knowing that they realistically needed three points to either win their group or finish as the runners-up to claim a play-off spot, but they failed to find the scoresheet and were punished by a James McClean goal in the second half.
Williams must shoulder some of the blame after he was robbed in possession by Jeff Hendrick and was too slow to react to the trouble, allowing McClean to score from the Burnley midfielder’s assist.
Everton supporters were quick to have their say on his showing via social media, and while some said he “gets worse every time he plays”, others said he “needs dropping this weekend” when the Toffees face Brighton at the Amex Stadium on Sunday.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
Hope he retires

And guess who lost the ball after being to slow before Ireland scored?

Yet another huge mistake by Ashley Williams! He doesn't look bothered when he's done it either. Needs dropping this weekend #efc

Ashley Williams has now become terrible for Wales as well. What an awful season he is having. #EFC

Williams lack of reaction tonight, and he's shown the same for #EFC this season, suggests he knows his legs have gone. Astonishing descent
