Everton were comfortably beaten 3-0 by Serie A side Atalanta in their opening Europa League group game on Thursday, and Toffees fans were not impressed with the performance of captain Phil Jagielka.

The skipper was recalled to the starting line-up after being on the substitutes' bench for the 3-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur at Goodison Park on Saturday, but he came into the team in place of Ashley Williams at the Mapei Stadium.

However, it was a tough night for the 35-year-old and his fellow defenders as they found themselves 3-0 down at the break, and the centre-back was partly at fault for the first goal.

Having been caught out of position and then giving away the corner that led to the first – with the ball then ricocheting off him before Andrea Masiello scored – he perhaps should have also done better for the third goal, too.

Everton supporters were quick to have their say on his performance via social media, with some describing him as a liability and others saying his "body language is poor".
