Everton midfielder Ross Barkley was nowhere to be seen during the recent international break with England.Well, that is not entirely true, he was on the bench, but he did not earn a minute of action in two games under manager Gareth Southgate. The Three Lions were beaten by Germany 1-0 in a friendly following an impressive goal from Lukas Podolski, who was playing in his last ever international fixture. At Wembley on Sunday, Southgate’s men took on Lithuania in a World Cup qualifier, and goals from Jermain Defoe and Jamie Vardy saw them over the line.Despite Barkley’s positive form for his club - he’s scored four goals and produced seven assists in 27 Premier League matches - he was an unused substitute in both games. In fact, the midfielder has not played a single second for his country in his last seven call-ups to the international side. Those games include matches against Russia, Wales, Slovakia and Iceland at Euro 2016, where England went crashing out in the last-16 stage.Squawka highlighted this fact in a tweet, and somewhat controversially, Barkley ‘liked’ it.

His social media actions could have been a way of hitting out at England, or perhaps he simply found it amusing.

Barkley’s attention will now swiftly turn to this Saturday’s Merseyside derby.
