Liverpool supporters have poked fun at the club for handing out a Player of the Month award following a terrible January for the Merseyside outfit.

Georginio Wijnaldum has been handed the gong by the Reds' sponsors Standard Chartered after making seven appearances, six of which were from the starting spot.

The midfielder, who joined Liverpool from Newcastle United last summer, received 22% of the vote, beating Simon Mignolet (18%) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (13%).

Jurgen Klopp's side did not have much to shout about in January as they won just one of their nine games in all competitions, which was a 1-0 triumph over Plymouth in the FA Cup, which they were knocked out of by Wolverhampton Wanderers a few days later.

The Reds put in a better performance against Chelsea when Wijnaldum header earned a 1-1 draw at Anfield, but they failed to hold on to any momentum as they were beaten 2-0 by Hull City in the following Premier League fixture.

Since the turn of the year, Liverpool have dropped 13 points adrift of league leaders Chelsea and are out of both the EFL Cup and FA Cup.

As one can imagine, not many fans were keen to celebrate any of their players receiving an award, and they made it clear on Twitter.
