Plenty of football fans have been left scratching their heads after Ben Gibson received a late call-up to the England squad.

The Middlesbrough defender has been selected by Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate ahead of Sunday's World Cup qualifier against Lithuania at Wembley.

Gibson's late call-up has come as a result of Manchester United centre-back Chris Smalling withdrawing from international duty with an injury.

The Boro defender has never been capped at senior level, but has featured 10 times for the England Under-21s, who were coached by Southgate before he replaced Sam Allardyce on a permanent basis.

Gibson has impressed in the Premier League this season, starting all 28 games for Boro and has even scored a goal in a potentially ill-fated campaign as the club reside five points from safety.

Some fans, though, do not believe that Gibson is deserving of his senior international call-up, and would have preferred a member of their own club to have got the nod.

Hull City fans in particular feel disappointed that Harry Maguire was not plucked out ahead of Gibson.
