Jamie Carragher's tweet about Everton star Ross Barkley evoked a negative reaction from football fans.

The England international put in a decent performance in the Toffees' 4-2 victory over last season's Premier League champions Leicester City at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Last weekend, though, against Merseyside rival Liverpool he attracted plenty of criticism after putting in a number of poor tackles, one of which could have easily resulted in a sending-off.

The midfielder lunged in on defender Dejan Lovren, but escaped with a booking and ended up finishing the 3-1 defeat at Anfield.

Barkley has come under scrutiny numerous times this season, largely because he is yet to completely fulfil his potential.

The midfielder spent a spell of the campaign on the sidelines because manager Ronald Koeman did not feel as though he was up to standard.

Since the winter months, the 23-year-old has been in much better form, scoring four goals and producing eight assists in 30 Premier League appearances.

Carragher, who spent 17 years playing for Liverpool, gave his assessment of Barkley's performance against Leicester on Twitter.

As expected, it attracted plenty of responses from football fans, with the majority of negative tweets coming from Liverpool supporters.
