The future does not look very bright for Wayne Rooney and Luke Shaw right now after Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho left both out of his squad for Wednesday’s Europa League trip to St Etienne.

Rooney has missed the team’s last four games with a muscular problem and rumours that he could leave the club are still rumbling given that the transfer window for the Chinese Super League does not close until next week.

There were suggestions that the club captain would play a part in the last-32 second leg in France after he trained this morning, but it was later confirmed that he is not included in the matchday squad.

Nor is Shaw, who has dropped down the pecking order dramatically over the last few months, and as a result, his long-term future at Old Trafford has been called into doubt.

The left-back has started just six Premier League games and has made a further seven appearances in all competitions.

Fitness seemed to be an issue earlier in the season shortly after Shaw recovered from a double leg fracture, but now it appears that Mourinho simply prefers others ahead of him.

Fans have given their thoughts to the players’ admissions on Twitter, with some baffled by Mourinho’s decision.
