Former Newcastle United star arrested in tax fraud probe, Magpies fans react

According to reports in Le Parisien, via The Mirror, former Newcastle United midfielder Sylvain Marveaux has been arrested in France as part of HMRC’s tax fraud investigation that targeted the Magpies and West Ham United on Wednesday.

Newcastle managing director Lee Charnley was also taken into custody and released without charge as the HMRC confirmed in a statement that “several men working within the professional football industry” had been arrested as part of the investigation.

Marveaux, who currently plays for FC Lorient in his home country, spent five years at St James’ Park between 2011 and 2016 before being released following their relegation to the Championship.

Newcastle United supporters were quick to have their say on their former winger’s arrest, with many choosing to poke fun at the situation by saying that the Frenchman stole of a living with them and he was a fraud on the pitch.
