Newcastle United trio Dwight Gayle, Jonjo Shelvey and Jamaal Lascelles were all named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year for the 2016-17 campaign.

Gayle's 22 Championship goals, and Shelvey's five goals and eight assists made them popular choices, but Lascelles' inclusion in central defence did not go down too well on social media.

The 23-year-old has faced criticism from opposition supporters this season, but he will be disappointed with the reaction of some Newcastle supporters to the news that he had been included in the PFA XI.

Lascelles has made 42 Championship appearances for promotion-hopefuls Newcastle this season, but it is his centre-back partner Ciaran Clark that should have been included in the team, according to a number of Newcastle supporters on social media.

Previously linked with Chelsea, the Englishman was named Newcastle captain at the start of the 2016-17 campaign, although his performances in the second tier of English football have divided opinion.

The defender will again be under the microscope on Monday night when the Magpies look to return to winning ways in the Championship against Preston North End.
