Leeds fans praise Pennington as he looks set for Sheffield Wednesday return

According to the Yorkshire Post’s chief football writer Phil Hay on Twitter, Leeds United loanee Matthew Pennington looks set to replace the suspended Liam Cooper against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Sunday, and Whites fans certainly seem to hold him in high regard.

The 22-year-old moved to Elland Road on a season-long loan deal from Everton during the summer transfer window, but he was forced off just 64 minutes into his debut on the opening day win against Bolton Wanderers after suffering an ankle injury.

Since then, Pontus Jansson and captain Cooper have formed a strong partnership at the heart of the defence, but the latter’s red card in the 3-1 loss to Cardiff City in the Welsh capital on Tuesday night has opened up an opportunity for the Toffees centre-back, who made his return as a substitute at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Leeds supporters have been having their say on Pennington’s situation via social media, and while some believe he is the “best defender at the club after Jansson”, others are hoping he can “make the position his own now” in Cooper’s absence.
