Leeds United began the new Championship season with a 3-2 win against Bolton Wanderers at the Macron Stadium on Sunday.
The Whites came into Thomas Christiansen’s first league match in charge without the suspended Pontus Jansson, but a seventh minute goal from Kalvin Phillips gave them the lead before last season’s top marksman Chris Wood doubled their lead on the half-hour mark.
Despite Gary Madine pulling one back for the hosts, Phillips restored the Yorkshire outfit’s two-goal advantage following some unselfish play from Wood.
Adam Le Fondre netted a late penalty for the Trotters but United held on to take all three points as they look to push for promotion to the Premier League this term.
Leeds supporters were quick to praise Phillips for his performance, with many supporters forced to eat humble pie and take back their criticism of the 21-year-old who provided a real goal threat from the middle of the park.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
Good start today, very positive signs. Need more players in defence though. Phillips was brilliant, I take back any criticism of him #lufc

O'kane was solid, thought Phillips was excellent even without the two goals. Anita was solid. Roofe/Alioski both looked decent #lufc

O'Kane unreal..still not sold on Phillips. Scores 2 but loses possession n plays needless balls all the time. Developing still like #LUFC

Been a while since we've seen a midfielder bursting through to really attack the ball and look to score goals like Phillips did today. #lufc

Can see Phillips playing a big part this season. Take him out of today's 11 and it looks very lightweight #lufc
