The majority of the time when a first-team player is handed a new contract, it is met with joy by the supporters, but not on this occasion.

Liverpool announced on Friday morning that defender Dejan Lovren has put pen to paper on a new long-term deal, and the fans were less than impressed.

The Merseyside outfit have had problems in defence for the entire season, and Lovren has struggled for consistency, in part due to injury problems.

In fact, since his 2014 move from Southampton, the Croatian is yet to really convince the whole Liverpool faithful that he is worthy of his place in central defence.

Despite having problems at the back, manager Jurgen Klopp opted against strengthening in the January window, and it is clear that he has plenty of confidence in Lovren now that the 27-year-old has penned fresh terms.

Liverpool have conceded 42 goals in the Premier League this season and they have only managed to keep eight clean sheets, which gives them the worst defence record out of the current top seven.

The Reds would have been hoping to get a positive reaction when announcing Lovren's new deal on Twitter, but they received the opposite.
