Liverpool fans urge club to move for Toby Alderweireld as contract talks stall

Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld confirmed to Sky Sports News that there had been no progress in talks over a new contract prior to his side’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday, and now Liverpool fans have urged the club to move for the Belgium international.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, he said: “No news that I know of so nothing…zero.”

The centre-back’s current deal with Spurs is due to run out in 2019 and The Times reported back in May that talks had stalled as the 28-year-old was demanding that a release clause was included in any new contract.

Sky Sports add that Alderweireld’s current deal contains a clause that says if Spurs trigger a year-long extension in 2019, that the centre-half can leave for £25m.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp has been trying to sign Southampton captain Virgil van Dijk all summer long but the latest reports in The Telegraph on Friday say that the south coast outfit are determined to keep the Dutchman.

With the uncertainty over a deal for Van Dijk, Liverpool fans have urged the club to take advantage of the uncertain situation surrounding Alderweireld by making a bid for the Belgian.
