Liverpool supporters pine for return of former centre-back

It would be fair to say that Liverpool’s back four this season has not been fantastic.

The Reds are exciting in the final third of the field, but their ability to challenge for silverware this season will surely be impaired by their problems at the back.

The failure to land Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk has left head coach Jurgen Klopp short of quality at centre-back, with Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren both struggling for form in the early stages of the 2017-18 campaign.

Many consider Jamie Carragher to be Liverpool’s best defender from the Premier League era, but Sami Hyypia was also excellent for the Reds during a 10-year spell at Anfield.

Indeed, the now 44-year-old made more than 300 Premier League appearances for Liverpool between 1999 and 2009 – helping the club win two FA Cups, two League Cups and one Champions League during his time on Merseyside.

Liverpool’s official Twitter account wished Hyypia a happy birthday on Saturday, and the response section was filled with the English club’s supporters wishing that they had the former Finland international to call upon this season.
