Manchester United were beaten 2-1 by Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup in Skopje on Tuesday night, and Red Devils fans were baffled as forward Anthony Martial failed to make it on to the pitch.

Jose Mourinho opted for a formation incorporating wing-backs as he decided to line up with a three-man defence, which saw Jesse Lingard start on the left-hand side.

However, it wasn’t a move that paid off and trailing 1-0 at the break thanks to Casemiro’s goal for the Champions League holders, the Portuguese boss replaced Lingard with Marcus Rashford.

The change didn’t make too much difference though as Isco doubled the La Liga side’s advantage, and although Romelu Lukaku pulled one back with just under half-an-hour to play they couldn’t find the goal they needed and strangely Martial wasn’t brought on to help them get it.

Man United supporters were quick to have their say on the decision to leave the Frenchman as an unused substitute via social media, and while some didn’t understand the decision after he made a big impact against Real during pre-season, others fear that it could signal the end of his Red Devils career.
