In a summer where clubs have sunk to new lows when it comes to announcing players and Manchester United are confirming transfers before they’re actually complete, the tone of Wayne Rooney’s return to Everton was surprisingly refreshing.
After the Toffees announced that the United captain, who left Goodison Park 13 years ago to join the Red Devils, would be making a return to Merseyside the 31-year-old took to social media to send a heartfelt message to the fans he is leaving behind.
“Thanks to the boards over the years, the managers and coaches I’ve played under, the staff I’ve worked with, the team mates I’ve played alongside, and finally the amazing fans that I’ve been lucky enough to have played for.
“Thanks for the memories.”
Rooney leaves Old Trafford after 13 memorable years, in which he picked up 16 trophies and scored 253 goals, surpassing Sir Bobby Charlton’s club record of 249 with a free-kick against Stoke last season.
While many fans were spilt over the £12.75m-rated star’s future under manager Jose Mourinho, his message has received an outstanding, and dignified response from fans…

This has literally made me cry like a baby, and I'm 23. Can't believe he's gone.
