Manchester United fans have expressed their frustration on Twitter after Chris Smalling withdrew from the England squad with an injury.

The Three Lions camp announced on Friday afternoon that the 27-year-old has returned to his club just two days before the nation's World Cup qualifier against Lithuania.

England have not given any detail about the injury or extent of the damage as yet, but he will not be available for this weekend's game.

As a result, Middlesbrough's Ben Gibson has been called into Gareth Southgate's squad, which already has a depleted defence due to Gary Cahill's suspension.

The Chelsea centre-back captained England in Wayne Rooney's absence in Wednesday's 1-0 friendly defeat to Germany in Dortmund, but due to his suspension he has now returned to Chelsea.

As well as England, United have some defensive problems of their own given that Phil Jones is nursing a toe injury and now Smalling is on the treatment table.

Ahead of a busy April when Jose Mourinho's side will play nine games, fans have expressed their concern on Twitter.
