Some Manchester United fans generally do not welcome criticism from ex-Liverpool players, and on this occasion, plenty have hit back at one former Red for his comments about Jose Mourinho.

Graeme Souness, who played and managed Liverpool during his career, has claimed that United made the wrong choice in appointing Mourinho last summer.

Under the Portuguese coach, the team's playing style and particular results in the Premier League attracted criticism.

United did not have the most positive of domestic seasons as they finished sixth in the standings, but they did end the campaign with two trophies - the League Cup and Europa League.

In addition, winning the second tiered European competition resulted in automatic qualification to the group stages of this season's Champions League.

Souness, though, has not been convinced by the former Chelsea boss. He told Yahoo Sport.

“I didn’t think Mourinho was right for United and I said that from day one. Because Guardiola was coming in an Manchester City, the people making decisions at Old Trafford felt compelled to go and get a big name manager and they ended up with Jose.

“He has taken on a very difficult job at United and struggled to find his find his best eleven last season, if he ever found it. A big concern for me that their best player for most of last season was a 35-year-old in Zlatan Ibrahimovic, with 35-year-old Michael Carrick also one of the top performers.

“Mourinho is used to winning league titles and finishing where he did last season in the Premier League will not be acceptable, but it won’t be easy to put it right.”

As expected, not many United fans agreed with Souness's sentiments, and they were quick to discredit him on Twitter.
