Not many Manchester United fans have been left excited by the prospect of signing Tottenham Hotspur's Eric Dier.

The Red Devils have been linked to the England international before, but a recent report in The Telegraph claims that United are 'cautiously optimistic' of signing him this summer.

The publication states that Dier is rated at around £40m and that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy could be persuaded to sell if the club sign Burnley defender Michael Keane.

Dier is traditionally a defensive midfielder, but he has largely been used at the back for Spurs this season due to manager Mauricio Pochettino preferring Victor Wanyama in the middle of the park.

According to The Telegraph, United boss Jose Mourinho would offer Dier the role as holding midfielder if the player and Tottenham were open to a deal.

Some of the Red Devils following would like to see Dier arrive at Old Trafford this summer, but others do not think that he meets the standard required.
