Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has revealed who will be marshalling the defence in Tuesday's Champions League opener, and the fans are not impressed.

Chris Smalling will partner summer signing Victor Lindelof at the back when the Red Devils face Group A opponents Basel at Old Trafford.

Eric Bailly and Phil Jones have started every one of United's four Premier League fixtures this season, but the pair are unavailable to feature on Tuesday due to UEFA bans.

Smalling has had his critics over the years due to inconsistent performances at the back.

The fact that he has dropped down the pecking order under Mourinho shows that he needs to prove himself.

United have started the season well, winning three of their top-flight outings, but they were restricted to a 2-2 draw by Stoke City on Saturday.

The fans are now concerned that their chances of beating Basel have dwindled due to Smalling being part of the first XI.

Lindelof has not started a game yet this season as Mourinho's plan is to gradually introduce him into the team.
