Manchester United fans worried Atletico ban could ruin Griezmann deal

Manchester United supporters received some bad news on Thursday morning with regards to their pursuit of Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport announced that the Spanish club’s appeal against a transfer ban has been rejected.

Atletico were hit with the punishment by FIFA after illegally signing academy players, and now that CAS has upheld the ban, the club will be unable to make signings until 2018.

This could affect the future of Griezmann, who has been heavily linked with a big-money move to United.

According to Deportes Cope, the France international has already informed Atletico that he wants to leave the club this summer.

These latest developments are likely to leave Atletico desperate to keep hold of Griezmann, but The Independent claims that if United meet the striker’s £87m release clause, then the Spanish outfit are powerless.

It will be up to the player to make the final decision, but he could feel growing pressure from Atletico considering that they will be unable to secure a replacement until January.

On the flip side, Simeone cannot convince Griezmann that the club are moving forward if he is banned from recruiting top-quality signings, which could force the forward out of the door.

Some United fans believe that Atletico’s inability to sign new players this summer means that the deal for Griezmann will collapse, while others think that the Red Devils should focus on other targets.
