Republic of Ireland winger James McClean took to Twitter to express his disappointment following his nation's result against Serbia.

The West Bromwich Albion player completed the entire 90 minutes in a 1-0 defeat in Dublin.

The outcome means that Martin O'Neill's side face an uphill battle to qualify for next summer's World Cup in Russia.

As it stands, the Boys in Green sit third in Group D, five points adrift of leaders Serbia and one adrift of Wales, who currently occupy the playoff spot.

McClean's nation conceded a goal from former Manchester City defender Aleksander Kolarov in the 55th minute of the clash.

Ireland were given some hope when Nikola Maksimovic was sent off with 22 minutes to go, but O'Neill's side were unable to capitalise on having the extra man and they settled for defeat.

After the match, McClean, who will rejoin the Baggies for Saturday's visit to Brighton, made his feelings clear on social media.

Republic of Ireland's final two qualifiers will be against Moldova and Wales in October.
