Five wins, eighteen defeats and twenty-six goals scored – a statistic line that looks poor whatever the circumstances.
Unfortunately for Middlesbrough, their lack of wins and terrible goal-scoring record means that they will be playing in the Championship next season.
Boro’s return to the Premier League last summer was met with much optimism. With a long-term, popular manager in Aitor Karanka, a competitive looking squad and some decent acquisitions, it seemed as though Boro would be able to handle the pressures of the Premier League.
Unfortunately, the club struggled to assert themselves offensively in games, often focusing far too much on clean sheets than putting the ball in the back of the net.
Not only did Aitor Karanka fail to impress in the top flight, a number of Boro’s new signings were a major disappointment. The likes of Antonio Barragan, Brad Guzan and Adama Traore simply looked nowhere near good enough to compete at the top level of English football.
Following Monday’s defeat to Chelsea, which confirmed the clubs relegation, Boro fans took to Twitter to express their disappointment…

A season of promise which ultimately fell well short. Big rebuilding job but definite potential for a strong #Boro squad in the Championship

Can't get over how a year ago everyone was buzzing for promotion and now we're relegated again #boro
