Newcastle United weren’t in action on Tuesday night, but the fans still had cause for celebration as their former striker Daryl Murphy scored the winning goal in Nottingham Forest’s 1-0 win against arch-rivals Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

The Magpies sold the 34-year-old to Forest for an undisclosed fee in July just a year after they had bought him themselves from Ipswich Town, and he has now scored four goals in his seven Championship appearances for Mark Warburton’s side following his low, angled finish against the Mackems.

The fact that the result leaves Sunderland 20th in the standings following their relegation to the second tier last term will make it even sweeter for the St James’ Park faithful, who have just seen their side record successive Premier League wins.

Newcastle supporters were quick to have their say on Murphy’s goal via social media, with some labelling him as a 'Newcastle legend' and others calling it "tremendous news".

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
