Newcastle United midfielder Mohamed Diame confirmed his retirement from international football at the age of 29 on the club’s official website on Wednesday, saying he wants to help the Magpies reach the Premier League this season.
The Senegalese midfielder picked up 31 caps for his country – scoring a solitary goal – but now wants to focus on his career with the Tyneside outfit.
Diame moved to St James’ Park from Hull City in August, and he has gone on to score six goals in 33 appearances in all competitions for Rafa Benitez’s side, including that incredible fluke goal against Brighton last month.
The 29-year-old has struggled for form in recent weeks, and was substituted off after an hour of their 3-1 defeat to Fulham last Saturday.
Following the official confirmation of the news on Wednesday, Newcastle fans were quick to have their say on the matter and some were less than complimentary about the midfielder.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reactions to the story…
@NUFC After his performance against Fulham last Saturday it would be nice if he announced his club retirement also! Absolutely shocking.

@NUFC Be honest, it was that Brighton goal wasn't it – after that, the international stage pales in comparison.

@NUFC I think he retired from running in the last game

@ChronicleNUFC judging by most of his performances in a NUFC shirt I'd thought he'd retired already. Another Sissoko tbh

@ChronicleNUFC We just want to see him run around every so often, it's hardly a big ask.
