Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic was on the scoresheet as the Magpies drew 1-1 with Preston North End in their latest pre-season friendly at Deepdale on Saturday.

The Serbia international was preferred to Dwight Gayle up top and he was certainly one of the stand-out performers for Rafa Benitez’s men, tapping home after Paul Dummett’s shot had been parried in the first-half, before hitting the post shortly after.

The 22-year-old’s future at St James’ Park is far from certain despite the fact that Benitez only really has him, Gayle and Siem de Jong to choose from as centre-forward options right now, and he certainly did his chances of staking a claim for a first team spot next term no harm at all with a goal.

Newcastle supporters were quick to have their say on the performance via social media, with many impressed with the qualities he showed and others wanting him to be given a chance in the upcoming Premier League season.
