According to reports in The Telegraph, Newcastle United are set to hand captain Jamaal Lascelles a new five-year deal, and Magpies fans are delighted with the news.

The Telegraph says that the contract indicates that manager Rafa Benitez is planning for the long term, and the moves comes on the back of the skipper forcing his way back into the team and scoring the winning goal in the 1-0 victory against Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium last weekend.

Despite being one of the Tyneside outfit's key men as they secured an instant return to the Premier League, the centre-back found himself on the substitutes' bench for the opening day clash against Tottenham Hotspur with Ciaran Clark and Florian Lejeune preferred in the starting line-up.

However, an injury to the latter has seen the 23-year-old regain his spot in the backline and he rose highest to head home the winner in south Wales on Sunday.

Newcastle supporters were quick to have their say on the rumour via social media, with some describing the decision as "shrewd business" considering Lascelles will only get better.
