Spanish defender Jesus Gamez scored his first Newcastle United goal in the Premier League club's 2-1 defeat to German side Mainz 05 on Saturday afternoon.

Gamez joined Newcastle on a two-year contract from Atletico Madrid last summer, but injury and the form of others saw the 32-year-old struggle for regular action last term.

The former Spain Under-23 international remains a popular figure with the club's supporters, however, and he took to Twitter at the weekend to reveal his delight at scoring his first goal for the Magpies in their pre-season clash, in addition to praising summer signing Mikel Merino.

It would be fair to say that the Newcastle supporters did not see the best of the experienced full-back last season, but it appears that the club's fanbase have kept the faith in a player that has a Champions League runners-up medal to his name.

Gamez will be out of contract at Newcastle at the end of next season, but many are tipping the Spaniard to play a key role in the club's Premier League campaign.
