According to the Shields Gazette, Stoke City's Joselu is closing on a move to Newcastle United as head coach Rafael Benitez looks to boost his forward options.

Newcastle have been linked with Joselu since the start of the month, and it is now being reported that the two Premier League clubs have come to an agreement.

The 27-year-old scored four Premier League goals for Stoke during the 2015-16 season, but spent last term on loan at Deportivo La Coruna - managing six goals in 24 appearances for the Spanish outfit.

It is understood that the forward is not in the plans of Stoke boss Mark Hughes this season, but Benitez sees his fellow Spaniard as a good option in the Premier League.

Newcastle suffered a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in their Premier League opener on Sunday, and it would be fair to say that the Magpies lacked a cutting edge in the final third of the field.

Joselu has experience of playing at this level of football, although the Newcastle supporters are not overly impressed with their club's latest piece of reported transfer activity.
