Newcastle United fans have been full of praise for Ayoze Perez after the forward sealed a personal milestone.

The Spaniard clocked up his 100th league game for the Magpies in Saturday's 2-1 victory over Wigan Athletic at St James' Park.

The 23-year-old did not get on the scoresheet himself as Dwight Gayle and Matt Ritchie found the back of the net.

He only played in the final 10 minutes of the match after coming on as a substitute for Gayle, but it was an important appearance in terms of his personal achievements.

The result means that Newcastle maintain their position at the top of the Championship, but they only have a one-point advantage over second-placed Brighton.

Ten points separate themselves from the playoffs, so it is becoming ever more likely that the Magpies' route back to the Premier League will be via automatic promotion.

Perez has contributed to the effort by scoring six goals and making five others in 30 Championship appearances, 19 of which were starts.

After tweeting his joy at sealing a century of league matches, fans were quick to praise.
