Newcastle United's summer transfer window did not please manager Rafael Benitez, but this latest bit of contract news is sure to delight him.

The Premier League club have announced that Jamaal Lascelles has signed a new contract at the club, extending his stay to at least 2023.

The defender faced some criticism during the 2016-17 campaign, but since the club returned to the top flight, Lascelles has shown leadership qualities.

The 23-year-old, who was handed the skipper's armband by Benitez last year, has played in all seven of the club's league fixtures.

During that time, the Magpies have climbed to ninth in the table, scoring seven goals and conceding six.

Lascelles, who signed for the North-East outfit from Nottingham Forest in 2014, has even scored twice for the team.

In total, the defender has made 75 appearances for Newcastle and there is talk of him being worthy of an England call-up.

After putting pen to paper, Lascelles told the club's official website:

“I’m over the moon. Since I came to Newcastle, I’ve been happy; I love the city, the football and the fans. Everything about it, I enjoy so I’m happy to be tied down for the next six years here. We’ve got a group of ambitious lads, the fans are excellent and the manager has got trust in me, so I’m really happy here and I want to take the club as high as it can go.”

Fans have been giving their reactions on Twitter.
