Newcastle United fans desperate for Ritchie to become captain

Newcastle United fans have made it known that they want Matt Ritchie to be the team’s new captain.

It was only in August last year when manager Rafael Benitez named Jamaal Lascelles as the new skipper, but after an impressive season, supporters want Ritchie to take the armband.

The 27-year-old has only been a Newcastle player for nine months after joining the North-East club from Bournemouth last summer.

The winger has made 38 Championship appearances this season, scoring 11 goals and creating seven assists in the process.

Ritchie also found the back of the net four times in six appearances in the cup competitions.

The Scotland international has shown consistency as well, scoring twice in his last two league appearances.

Ritchie has been a pivotal cog in Benitez’s machine, with the team closing in on a return to the Premier League.

The Magpies sit at the top of the table on 84 points with six games left to play, and they have a significant 10-point lead over the playoff pack.

In reply to Newcastle’s tweet linking to an interview with Ritchie, fans called on Benitez to make the winger captain.
