Newcastle United fans slam Winks’s call-up to England squad

Harry Winks was a late call-up to the England squad after Fabian Delph and Phil Jones withdrew due to injuries.

The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has never before represented his country at senior level, but may get a chance to win his first cap on Thursday when the Three Lions take on Slovenia at Wembley in their penultimate World Cup qualifier.

The 21-year-old has received support from many quarters, but there are some Newcastle United fans who are unhappy with Gareth Southgate’s decision.

Plenty feel that Jonjo Shelvey was more deserving of a place in the squad than Winks, who has started just one Premier League game so far this season.

Shelvey has had his critics, and they came out in their droves when the midfielder was sent off for stamping on Dele Alli’s ankle during the opening weekend of the campaign.

Last Sunday, though, he was one of Rafael Benitez’s standout players in a 1-1 draw with Liverpool at St James’ Park.

Following the announcement that Winks had been added to the England fold, Newcastle fans took to Twitter.
