Newcastle United supporters are keen on the idea of signing Jermain Defoe this summer, despite the striker currently playing for their arch rivals Sunderland.

According to The Sun, Magpies boss Rafael Benitez is considering a move for the England international, who is expected to be in demand this summer.

Defoe, who will turn 35 in October, has scored 14 goals in 30 league appearances for Sunderland.

After recently returning to the international fold following a three-year exile, it is fair to say that the striker may look to join a Premier League club if the Black Cats suffer relegation to the Championship.

As it stands, they look likely to do so as the club are rooted to the bottom of the table, 10 points from safety with eight games left to play.

Sunderland could be swapping placed with Newcastle, who are on the verge of sealing automatic promotion back to the top flight, just one season after getting relegated.

Following the transfer rumours, fans of the Magpies have taken to Twitter to give their thoughts on a possible deal.
