It was an eventful opening Premier League weekend as it pretty much had everything; goals, shock results and sending-offs.One particular red card was issued at St James’ Park on Sunday when Newcastle United and last season’s runners-up Tottenham Hotspur went head to head. The recipient was Jonjo Shelvey, who was given his marching orders early in the second half of Spurs’ 2-0 win. While on he floor, Dele Alli kicked the ball away when Shelvey tried to pick it up, and in response, the former Liverpool man trod on his opponent’s ankle. It was spotted by the referee and given the appropriate punishment, which put the Magpies immediately on the backfoot at a time when the match was still goalless.Plenty of fans took to Twitter to give their verdicts on the incident, as did some former players, who now work as TV pundits.Ex-Newcastle star Alan Shearer had no sympathy for Shelvey, while Gary Neville and Gary Lineker also criticised the 25-year-old’s conduct.
