Rangers revealed on Sunday that they have appointed former player Jonatan Johansson as the assistant coach of Pedro Caixinha, ending endless speculation about who would take up the post at Ibrox.

Names such as Barry Ferguson, John Brown and Peter Lovenkrands had all been interviewed for the post but Pedro Caixinha has opted for the Finnish former striker, who enjoyed a successful three years with the club in the late 90s. He was a key part of the side that won a famous domestic treble of trophies in 1998/99 under Dick Advocaat.

Caixinha had been looking for a figure that could help him understand Rangers and Scottish football. Johansson has extensive playing experience in Scotland, also playing for Hibernian and St Johnstone. He also possesses coaching knowledge in the country, spending 3 years behind the scenes at Greenock Morton and Motherwell.

However, his appointment has not gone down with universal praise, some supporters feeling that the club should have opted for the likes of former captain Barry Ferguson.
