Southampton winger Nathan Redmond missed the crucial penalty that saw England knocked out of the European Under-21 Championships at the semi-final stage against Germany on Tuesday, but he was quick to receive a message of support from club teammate Oriol Romeu.

The Spaniard has quickly become a popular figure among the St Mary’s faithful following a successful campaign last season where he established himself as a key part of the side, winning both the Fans’ and Players’ Player of the Season award.

He will have gone even higher up in those estimations following his latest message, which is sure to have been well received by Redmond following a disappointing end to his England Under-21s career.

Southampton supporters were quick to respond to Romeu’s comments to Redmond via social media, and they are calling on new Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino to give him the captaincy for next season, especially with the continued doubts over the future of the man that currently holds it – Virgil van Dijk.
