According to reports in the Daily Mirror, Liverpool legend John Aldridge has urged Southampton captain Virgil van Dijk to go on strike in order to push a move through to Anfield this summer.

Saints reported the Reds to the Premier League earlier this month as they believe they had tapped the Dutch defender up when stories emerged that Van Dijk was keen to link up with Jurgen Klopp, and the Merseyside outfit were forced to release a statement on their official website stating that they had ended their interest in the £70m-rated 25-year-old.

However according to the Daily Mirror, former Reds star Aldridge has reignited that rumour with his latest comments.

He said: “Players and their agents hold all the power these days and if he says he won’t kick another ball for Southampton and demands a move, it will happen.”

Southampton supporters were quick to have their say on the comments via social media, and they are understandably furious that a former player is trying to convince another to refuse to play for the club where he is under contract in order to push through a move.
