Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk made his long-awaited return to action for the Under-23 side on Monday night, but Saints fans weren’t impressed with his performance as the south coast outfit were thrashed 4-0 by Aston Villa at Walsall’s Bescot Stadium.
All eyes were on the Dutchman after he was named in the starting line-up following almost nine months on the sidelines because of injury and his failed attempt to leave the club during the summer, and he certainly showed a lot of rustiness.
The Netherlands international arguably should have done better for the first, second and fourth Villa goals on the night, and he certainly doesn’t look as though he will be considered for a first team return for the trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday based on this showing.
Southampton supporters were quick to have their say on Van Dijk’s showing via social media, and while some described his efforts as an “absolute disgrace”, others feel that the club “can’t trust him” to be committed in Premier League games.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
Seen the goals in the U23 game. Such an obvious lack of desire from VVD 😂 3 of the goals he could've/should've prevented? #SaintsFC

Well VVD is not the solution to our problems then. Don't see how he can start Palace after tonight. We can't trust him. #saintsfc

Really poor from Van Dijk. Diving in and not chasing back. Needs to prove he's arsed before starting for the first XI #saintsfc

That's not lacking match sharpness, that's lacking the right attitude. Disgraceful defending.

Vvd is having a mare. Not that he looks bothered.
