According to reports in the Sunday Mirror, via Sky Sports’ Paper Talk, Southampton have approached Belgium boss Roberto Martinez about their vacant manager’s job.
Saints sacked Claude Puel on Wednesday with the Frenchman failing to win over the fans and the players despite securing an eighth-place finish and reaching the final of the League Cup.
The south coast outfit are looking for his replacement and have apparently sounded out Martinez – who took the Belgium role last summer after being sacked by Everton – as a potential candidate.
Southampton supporters were quick to have their say on the rumour via social media, and they were divided on their opinions of the 43-year-old.
While some said they would take him because of his attacking style of play, others were not so keen.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
Nice style of football, with attacking philosophies, but would need a seriously good defensive in coach alongside him IMO. #saintsfc

I'm sure Roberto Martinez' name is just being used as a smokescreen.

If the club has any sense they will not get Martinez. Absolute shocking manager. #SaintsFC
