Time for Sturridge… Liverpool fans call on star to step up after Mane blow

Liverpool fans everywhere have been refreshing their Twitter feeds and anxiously waiting for news on Sadio Mane and his injured knee since Saturday afternoon. The Senegalese attacker limped out of the Merseyside Derby win after twisting the joint in question during an innocuous challenge with Leighton Baines and although he walked unaided from the dressing room after the final whistle, many feared that his season would be over.

And the Liverpool Echo have revealed today that that might indeed be the case, with scans suggesting that he will need surgery to repair a damaged meniscus ligament in his left knee, which would rule him out for eight weeks, or in other words, the rest of 2016/17. Given his 13 goals make him Jurgen Klopp’s top scorer this term, this is a mighty blow and with a top four finish on the agenda, the German needs his other players to step up.

One option, as Dietmar Hamann (above) says, is Daniel Sturridge, who is back in training and could be involved this evening vs. Bournemouth. The England international is known as a dangerous goalscorer, but fitness issues have plagued his Anfield career, limiting his game time. Klopp himself has been reluctant to use Sturridge this season, but fans are hopeful that he can step up and fire their team across the line over the coming weeks…
