Tottenham Hotspur booked their spot in the fourth round of the EFL Cup following a narrow 1-0 win over Barnsley at Wembley on Tuesday night.

It looked as if Tottenham's problems on home soil would continue after an impressive defensive performance from Barnsley, but Dele Alli scored the only goal of the match in the 65th minute to ensure that Mauricio Pochettino's side would progress.

As expected, Pochettino made changes for the League Cup clash, and with neither Hugo Lloris nor Harry Kane involved, the captain's armband was handed to Jan Vertonghen.

The 30-year-old, who is rated at £28m by transfermarkt.co.uk, has made more than 200 appearances for Tottenham since joining from Ajax in 2012, and there is no question that the Belgian is considered as one of the leaders in the dressing room.

After being handed the armband against Barnsley, Tottenham fans were quick to hail Vertonghen, with some claiming that the centre-back should be the team's leader on a full-time basis.
