According to reports in The Mirror, Totteham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has made Celta Vigo’s Pape Cheikh Diop is number one midfielder transfer target before the summer window slams shut at the end of this month.
The Mirror says that the Argentine’s preference could threaten Ross Barkley’s chances of joining the north London outfit from Everton, with Pochettino keen to make the La Liga starlet his first signing of the summer.
Barkley had looked set to leave the Toffees before the end of August having turned down the offer to extend a contract which runs out next summer, and the Merseyside outfit are keen to cash in on him rather than lose him for nothing next year.
Meanwhile, Diop made 19 appearances in all competitions for Celta last season and is considered to be a top prospect having regularly featured for Spain at youth level.
Tottenham supporters were quick to have their say on the rumour via social media, and many have questioned the decision as they aren’t sure that Diop is an upgrade on the likes of Harry Winks and Josh Onomah.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Admittedly from the little I've seen, he looks behind Onomah in terms of being near our first team.

Don't believe that

Even of we sign him he'll play more games with the u21 than with the first team. Good talent but looong way to go yet.

Any idea who this kid is or is he worth googling? 👀

I'mm no scout but C.V. supporters don't rate him, from the little I've seen he offers nothing more than Winksy or Onomah, far less imo
