Tottenham Hotspur announced on their official website on Friday that they had reached an agreement with Ajax to sign defender Davinson Sanchez on a six-year deal, subject to a medical and work permit.
Despite the fact that there is less than two weeks before the transfer window slams shut, the 21-year-old is the first arrival at the north London outfit this summer after becoming a first-team regular for the Dutch giants and being a key part of the side that lost out to Manchester United in the Europa League final in May.
BBC Football says the deal is worth a club-record £42m, which exceeds the £30m fee they paid for Moussa Sissoko last year.
Tottenham supporters were quick to have their say on the news via social media, and while many were relieved that they had finally made a signing, others poked fun at arch-rivals Arsenal by saying that they now have the best Sanchez in north London, with the Gunners having Alexis in their ranks.
