West Ham United announced via their official Twitter account on Thursday that midfielder Pedro Obiang had signed a new five-year deal with the club.

The 25-year-old joined the club two years ago in a £4.3m deal from Sampdoria, but his future looked to be in doubt last summer after he struggled to break into the staring line-up during his first season with the east London outfit.

However, the Spaniard quickly became a key player for the club in the middle of the park last term, and he was the runner up in the end of season Hammer of the Year award after making 30 appearances in all competitions, despite failing to feature after picking up an ankle injury against Leicester City in March.

Irons supporters were quick to have their say on the new contract via social media, and while the majority were delighted with the news, others feel that the midfielder is overrated.
