West Ham United left-back Aaron Cresswell was a surprise inclusion in Gareth Southgate’s latest 25-man England squad on Thursday.

The Three Lions are due to face Scotland in a 2018 World Cup qualifier at Hampden Park next month before facing France in a friendly at the Stade de France a few days later, and Cresswell could add to the single cap he picked up against Spain in 2016.

The 27-year-old’s place in the squad is a bit of a shock considering he has endured a tough season with the Irons and he often saw Arthur Masuaku start ahead of him on the left-hand side in the closing stages of the campaign.

However, with Danny Rose and Kieran Gibbs absent through injury there was little choice for Southgate as he looked to provide competition for Ryan Bertrand.

West Ham supporters were quick to have their say on the news via social media, with many surprised at the call after stating that the full-back had been “appalling” this season.
