Plenty of West Ham United fans have urged the club to move for Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe in the summer after he scored on his competitive return to England.

The 34-year-old was the headline name of Gareth Southgate's squad for games against Germany and Lithuania.

The striker had been left out of the international setup for the past three years, but his goalscoring ability did not go unnoticed by Southgate.

Despite Sunderland being rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table, Defoe has impressed individually by netting 14 goals in 28 appearances.

That form, coupled with Harry Kane's absence through injury, led to an England recall and it was one to remember for Defoe.

In Sunday's World Cup qualifier against Lithuania at Wembley, the forward opened the scoring in the 21st minute, marking his first England goal in four years.

Jamie Vardy added another goal in the second half as the Three Lions sealed a 2-0 triumph to move four points clear at the top of Group F.

Defoe's goal was especially noticed by West Ham fans, with many hoping that the club make a move for him in the summer.

The ex-Tottenham Hotspur man came through the ranks at the East London club before leaving in 2004.
